Good morning.
How are you doing? Trust great.
I would like to start by wishing you a prosperous 2023. I started the new year by reflecting on the past year and what I have achieved. Glad to say I achieved most of what I planned to do last year (I hope you achieved yours). I also had a couple of setbacks from which I picked valuable lessons because I always remember to look at failures as lessons.
Tips for Healthcare Businesses in 2023
If you operate in the healthcare space as business owner, technology has pervaded the space, and we need to adapt quickly, and also find ways to keep abreast with events. The prediction is that there will be more focus on value-based health care services to improve patient experience in the hospitals and healthcare facilities. Other trends include more adoption of AI in healthcare, and robotics, bridging the mental health gap.
As business owners, we need to find ways to improve patient satisfaction with our healthcare services. Some proven ways of doing this include calling patients by their names, spending some time on patient education (telling them more about their condition), ensuring that your facility is clean and welcoming.
Business owners are hemorrhaging staff mostly due to Japa. Sadly, it seems not much can be done about it but improving the work environment and welfare in general for workers might help short term.
Brand Visibility
Healthcare brands should aim to become more visible on social media as it has been shown to build trust. Most persons use social media to search for healthcare, and with social media, you can educate your audience, and share posts. Popular social media platforms that healthcare brands can explore include Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, TikTok, and LinkedIn. Your organization’s goals determine how you use these platforms as the audiences and demographics differ.
Thinking of Changing Careers?
The rate of healthcare worker burnout has been on the rise over the years especially for those involved in direct clinical care. We have seen loads of Nigerian doctors and nurses migrate to practice in the UK and other countries, while some have entirely changed careers to health tech jobs. If you are looking to pivot into health tech, here are some trends you might want to consider before taking a decision as to what area of health tech to get into. Top health tech trends for 2023 include:
Artificial intelligence
Machine learning
Health informatics
Digital Health
Internet of things (IOT)
Big data
Telehealth.
I talked about how to get into health tech here.
A Glance into 2022
So, I started a YouTube channel November 2022 which is focused on talking about different aspects of healthcare. I found out that there was no source of information for healthcare professionals looking to get into other aspects of medicine either part time or full time. I have discussed several topics on my channel but here is a list of my favorites:
If you are deeply interested in Digital Health, this carefully curated playlist will give you all the information that you need to get started.
Live Streams
I had some live streams last year. There was a session where I invited two students currently studying MSc Digital health at Bournemouth University to share their experience in school. Watch it here. For those interested in becoming physician scientists and clinical research broadly, we had Dr. Uche who is a physician scientist based in the United States, come and share her journey and top tips on how to get into the sector.
Upcoming Trainings
In a bid to help more healthcare professionals who are looking to get into health tech, I will be organizing a webinar in the last week of January 2023 (date TBC) to address most of the burning questions that a lot of individuals have. If you are looking to pivot into health tech, please plan to attend. Keep an eye on your emails from me.
Your Health Matters
As healthcare professionals, we work day and night trying to deliver the best of healthcare to patients, and most times, forgetting to take care of our own selves. You need to decide to prioritize your healthcare this year and take deliberate steps to maintain them. Â
I understand that we all need to make money to make ends meet but of what use is the money when you cannot enjoy it?
Here are somethings you should do this year:
Exercise more
Eat healthier (more fruits and veggies)
Drink water
Have a comprehensive health check up
Plan a vacation and go for it
Resist the urge to take more locum covers
Hang out with family and friends
Learn something new outside medicine e.g a craft or skill
Get more financially literate.
This list is not exhaustive, you can add more.
Till I write you again, I wish you the best of 2023. You can chat with me using the Substack chat feature.
Please subscribe to my YouTube channel as I post new videos every Friday by 8pm (WAT). If there are topics you would love me to address or guests you would like to see on the show, please email me at dr.ikpe@yahoo.com
Sincerely,
Dr. Ron
